Renegades Weekly Recap #4 Dec 23-31

Renegades close out 2010 with a game in NYC on new years eve

Week Record: 2-1-0    Season Record: 5-6-2 8pts (4th Western Division, 8th in Howe Conference)

Games: 12/27 @ Admirals 2-1 W, 12/29 vs Americans 5-0 W, 12/31 @ Ravens 3-1 L
The Renegades won two out of three this past week, including a 5-0 win at home against the Americans which saw Teemu Selanne net his 400th career goal.  The first time any skater in the history of the NHA had scored 400 goals.
The Renegades ended the week in New York City against the Ravens in the Larry Robinson Arena on new years eve, and got to take part in the new years eve celebration after the game.
Craig Anderson recorded his first shutout of the season against the Americans, and his first career shutout with the Renegades.  He saved 17 shots that night.
Much of the Renegades production continues to come from the second line.  The forwards on the second line scored four goals this week.  Matthew Lombardi, the left wing on the second line leads the Renegades in goals, while the other two forwards of the second line, Dainius Zubrus and Milan Hejduk are tied for second on the Renegades in goals.
Captain Chris Drury scored his first goal of the 2010-2011 season this week.

Goals: Alexander Steen (4), Ian White (2), Teemu Selanne (3), Matthew Lombardi (5), Dainius Zubrus (4), Milan Hejduk (3,4), Chris Drury (1).

Game of the Week:  The only home game of the week on 12/29 against the Americans was this weeks game of the week.  The Renegades executed perfectly, outplaying the Americans across the board.  The Americans were out shot 31-17, with Anderson saving all 17 shots on goal.  The Renegades scored a total of five goals, including Lombardi's team leading 5th goal of the season.

3 Stars of the Week:
1) G Craig Anderson -- 2 wins, 1 shutout, .942 save percentage
2) RW Milan Hejduk -- 2 goals, 2 assists
3) LW Alexander Steen -- 1 goal, 2 assists

Rumors:  The Renegades are currently slightly over the cap and because of this are unable to make any changes to their team.  They are continuing to desperately seek a trade for Adam Foote to get them back under the cap but no teams have shown interest in Foote yet.

AHA Update: The Albany Attack are currently riding a three game winning streak.  Greg Mauldin scored his first goal for the Attack this week.

Next Weeks Schedule:  The Renegades will make two trips to western US this week.  The Renegades will start their first week of 2011 at home against the New York Ravens (8-4-0) on Monday night for the second of two back to back series with the Ravens.  This will be the final game against the Ravens this season.  The Ravens currently lead the series 2-1.  After the game the Renegades will immediately fly out to California to play the San Jose Sting Rays (6-4-1) on Tuesday night at the Bruce Nightingale Memorial in San Jose.  This will be the first of three games against the Sting Rays this season.  After a day off, the Renegades will return home for their third game of the week  against inter-division rival, the Ottawa Running Yaks (9-1-2) on Thursday night.  The Renegades will then again fly out west to play the Phoenix Gargoyles (5-2-4) at the Sunrise Arena in Phoenix, Arizona.

Teemu Selanne Scores Goal #400!

Teemu Selanne becomes the first player in NHA history to score 400 goals

RALEIGH- Teemu Selanne's slap shot goal which put the Renegades up 4-0 last night at the RBC center, only eight seconds into the third period, was a very memorial and emotional one. Selanne, who the Renegades signed as a free agent to a monstrous one year contract during the off-season. Selanne leads the NHA in goals, and is the first player in the history of the NHA which dates back to 1998 to score 400 goals.
The Renegades went on to win the game 5-0, giving Craig Anderson his first shutout of the season, only having to save 17 shots by the struggling Washington Americans.   The Renegades are now on a three game winning streak, and have won five of their last seven games.
Second to Teemu Selanne on the all-time goals scored list is fellow Renegade Milan Hejduk, who scored his 328th career goal to break the 0-0 tie at 14:06 in the second period.
The Renegades will now go on to face the New York Ravens in New York City on New Years Eve and hopefully have a long victory celebration afterwards on time square.

Renegades Weekly Recap #3 Dec 19-22

Alexander Steen scores two goals in three games this week

Season Record: 3-5-2 8pts (4th Western Division)

Weeks Record: 1-2-0

Games: 12/19 vs Ravens 2-1 L, 12/21 @ Freeze 3-1 L, 12/22 vs Predators 5-4 W
The Renegades started off the week with two close low scoring losses and then finished the week winning a game that featured a total of 9 goals.
The Renegades did not have a great start to the week, they were down 2-0 against the Ravens when Ian White scored his first goal of the season to put the Renegades on the board.  The Renegades, who have struggled offensively this season, only scored a total of two goals in the first two games this week.  In the second game against the Freeze, Matthew Lombardi scored the equalizer which kept the game tied for awhile but then the Freeze ran away with a goal late in the second and a goal in the third.
The Renegades have struggled greatly in the shots category this week, being out shot 78-107.
Even though the Renegades did win their last of three games this week, they were still out shot 28-38.  "The team really needs to work on getting the puck to the net, obviously it is a lot harder to win hockey games when you are losing in the shots category."  said Renegades coach Tom Renney.  "We also need our defensive parings to work harder to take away some of our opponents opportunities."
The Renegades have struggled on defense as Adam Foote has not performed up to his expectation and has been demoted to a 7th extra defensive spot.

Goals:  Alexander Steen 2 (3), Matthew Lombardi (4), Dustin Byfuglien (1), Patrick Kane (4), Shawn Horcoff (1), Ian White (1)

Game of the Week:  The Renegades game against the Predators at home, which was one day after a lost in Edmonton, turned into a scoring feast with the Renegades winning 5-4.   After an early 3-0 lead for the Renegades, the Predators kept the Renegades in check for the rest of the night.  They made is 3-2 very quickly after the Renegades took a 3-0 lead, and then quickly scored after each of the next two Renegades goals.  Alexander Steen scored two goals in the game, while top defender Dustin Byfuglien scored his first of the season. J.S. Giguere was in net for the Predators, and was chased out of the game after four goals.  He was replaced by Corey Crawford.  Even though the game was filled with goals, Renegades goalie Craig Anderson fielded 10 more shots than the Predators goalies, and allowed one less goal compared to the Predators goalies.

3 Stars of the Week:
1) LW Alexander Steen -- 2 goals, 1 assist
2) RW Milan Hejduk -- 4 assists
3) G Craig Anderson - .916 save percentage

Transactions:  There was no Transactions this week.

Rumors:  The Renegades are still looking at shopping Adam Foote for either a 3/4th line forward, or a prospect or two.  They have yet to receive any offers.  One team had inquired about Dustin Byfuglien this past week, offering just a 3rd line forward and a draft pick.  The Renegades stated again that they are not interested in trading anyone on their NHA roster besides Adam Foote at this moment.

NHA Update: The Albany Attack have struggled lately, including a 7-3 loss to the King Fish.  Gabe Gauthier continues to lead the team in goals this season with 6.  Yan Stastny, who was signed in the offseason, leads the Attack in total points with 8.

Around the League: Last years NHA cup champions, the Las Vegas nights, have yet to gain a point in the standings yet this season.  They are currently 0-9-0 and have only scored 10 goals in their first nine games while giving up 27.

Next Weeks Schedule:  Next's weeks schedule starts early with a game tomorrow night on Christmas eve in Tampa.  Do to the Holliday weekend the game will be mentioned in week 4's recap.  After Christmas, the Renegades will face the Washington Americans (6-4-0) at home on sunday, followed by the second of two home-in-home series against the New York Ravens (5-4-0).  The games will take place in New York on tuesday and at home on Friday.  The Renegades split the previous series this week 1-1, with both teams losing at home.  The Renegades will then fly out to San Jose for a game on Friday against the San Jose Sting Rays (5-3-1).  This will be the first of three games against the Sting Rays this season.

Renegades Weekly Recap #2 Dec 12-18

Hejduk has a breakout week as Renegades begin to roll

Week Record: 2-0-1

Games: 12/13 @ Mammoths 3-2 OTL, 12/15 vs Admirals 4-2 W, 12/17 vs Ravens 4-3 W
The Renegades have started to turn their luck around, getting five points in their six games this past week.
The Renegades lines are really starting to click now.  Most notably the second line.  Milan Hejduk, the right winger of the third line, scored two goals and had three assists in the last three games.  The left wing of the second line, Matthew Lombardi, also had 2 goals and three assists this week and the last member of the line, Dainius Zubrus, had four points this week with two goals and two assists.  It’s not surprising that the second line was the first line to start gaining chemistry, as this is the only offensive line composed of players that played for the Renegades last season.  Hejduk, Zubrus and Lombardi all have experience playing with each other last year, withZubrus and Lombardi both on the same line a year ago.
Craig Anderson has continued to perform respectably with a .907 save percentage.  His weakness is that he has been letting in a lot of third period goals.  He has allowed five of the eight goals Anderson has allowed these past three games have been in the third period.
Highly touted free agent acquisition Teemu Selanne scored his first and second goal as a Renegade this week.

Goals: Patrick Kane 2 (3), Matthew Lombardi 2 (3), Teemu Selanne 2 (2), Milan Hejduk 2 (2), Dainius Zubrus 2 (3), Alexander Steen (1)

Game of the Week:  Last Friday night, the Renegades played their first game of their first of two home and home series against the Ravens in New York City this month.  On the shot chart, the teams were dead even.  With a quiet first seeing five shots from both teams, and by the end of the game, both teams had exactly 32 shots.  The difference was the goaltending job of Craig Anderson and the play making job of the Renegades skaters.  This game featured the Renegades traditional offensive force which had been lacking at the start of the season.  The Renegades took a commanding 4-1 lead into the fourth when the Ravens scored two quick goals to bring the game close 4-3.  This close game brewed a fight between Teemu Selanne and Henrik Sedin.  Sedin was also given a game misconduct for instigating the fight.  This gave the Renegades a power play which Patrick Kane was able to take advantage of, and score his third goal of the season, putting the game away for the Renegades.

3 Stars of the Week:
1) RW Milan Hejduk – 2 goals 4 assists
2) LW Matthew Lombardi – 2 goals 4 assists
3) C Dainius Zubrus – 2 goals 3 assists

Transactions:  The Renegades brought up rookie Kevin Shattenkirk replacing Brian Willsie who is currently suspended for the rest of the season for unknown reasons.  Shattenkirk should help the weak defense and replace Adam Foote in the three lines as Foote has been battling fatigue and personal issues.  Foote should still see playing time every night but not very much.  The Renegades also sent down Ryan Hollweg for wing Jiri Tlusty.

Rumors:  The Renegades had stated earlier that they were not going to make any trades effecting their NHA roster for at least a month or two no matter what the teams record is.  But with this being said, rumor has it that Adam Foote is being shopped do to the emergence of Kevin Shattenkirk.  The Renegades are looking for prospects or a young 3rd/4th wing offensive forward in exchange for Foote.

Next Weeks Schedule:  The Renegades will complete the home-in-home series against the New York Ravens in  Raleigh Sunday night.  They will then fly to Edmonton to take on the Freeze, and then return home that night to face the Los Angeles Predators the very next day.  Their last game of the week will be on Christmas Eve in Tampa to play their second of three games against the Admirals this season.

Renegades Weekly Recap #1 Dec 5-11

Matthew Lombardi scored the first Renegades goal of the 2010-2011 season

Week Record: 0-3-1

Games: 12/5 @ Death 3-1 L, 12/6 vs Phantoms 3-1 L, 12/8 vs Blades 4-0 L, 12/11 @ Thunder 2-1 OTL
The Renengades did not start the season the way they were hoping to.  The team that had the best record in their conference one year ago still has yet to get a win in the 2010-2011 season.  The Renegades have allowed 12 goals and only scored 3 in the first four games.
Craig Anderson got a game misconduct early in the first period in the home opener, which the Renegades went on to lose 3-1.
"We are not worried at all." Said coach Tom Renney.  "Every season we tend to start off poorly, it takes us some time to build momentum."
The Renegades have been struggling on the power play, having many power plays go by with zero shots on goal.  The Renegades on paper appear to be a strong offensive team but they have not showed their offensive weapons at all yet.
Matthew Lombardi was the first Renegade to score a goal this season.

Goals: Matthew Lombardi (1), Dainius Zubrus (1), Patrick Kane (1).

Game of the Week:  The Renegades final game of this past week, against the Toronto Thunder, proved to be an exciting one, where the Renegades got their first point of the 2010-2011 season.  They faced against their old goal tender in Marty Turco who had spent the last four seasons in Raleigh.  Patrick Kane scored first for his first goal of the year, but Toronto tied it up and those were the only goals in regulation.  Craig Anderson showed why the Renegades replaced Turco with him as Anderson saved 34 of 35 shots for a .971 save percentage.  His performance gave him the first star of the game award.  However the Thunder won the game in a shootout.  Turco saved 28 of 29 shots for a .966 save percentage and was the second star of the game.

3 Stars of the Week:
1) G Craig Anderson - .923 save percentage
2) D Ian White - 2 Assists
3) LW Patrick Kane - 1 goal

Rumors:  One team has inquired about Dustin Byfuglien, but the Renegades have stated that all their players are safe, and that no matter what happens they have no plans of making any trades that would effect their NHA roster until at least a month or two into the season.  There have been a couple of teams that have also inquired about prospect defender Dimitri Orlov, and because the Renegades do have a good number of defenders they said they may be willing to part with a defensive prospect for an offensive of goalie prospect.

Transactions:  The Renegades have traded defensive prospect Cade Fairchild earlier today to the Dallas Storm for goalie prospect Sam Brittain.  "Fairchild has shown a lot of promise, but we are afraid that his size might limit him in the future.  Brittain is a big guy and has taken advantage of his size at the University of Denver this season with a .929 save percentage with a 2.08 goals per game average in 16 games.  He is 10-4 with one shootout.  The Renegades have also signed forward Greg Mauldin to a minor league contract who played his first game for the Attack earlier today.
During the offseason, the Renegades make a large purchase and acquired their own airplane, a used Boeing 747 titled Renegade AirIt is the largest airplane for a sports team, as most teams that do not charter their flights use Boeing 737s.  The airplane will also be used to transport the Albany Attack to most of their games.

Injuries: The Renegades have had no injuries so far this season!

AHA Update: The Albany Attack have had a decent season so far this year going 2-2-0.  Yan Stastny leads the team in goals and points with 3 goals and 4 points.  Rookie Kevin Shattenkirk is tied with Stastny with 4 points from 4 assists.  Gabe Gauthier also has three goals, tied with Stastny, and is the only other member of the attack with more than one goal.  Brian Finley has both of the teams wins but sports a .898 save percentage.  Rejean Beauchemin, who has only started one game so far, has a .395 save percentage and is expected to start in the next game vs the Quebec Voltigeurs in Quebec.

Next Week Schedule:  The Renegades have three games next week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  The game on monday night will be the first of the season against division rival Pittsburgh Mammoth (1-1-1) in Pittsburgh.  The Renegades will return home to play the Tampa Bay Admirals (2-1-0) on Wednesday before flying on Renegade Air to New York to face the New York Ravens (2-1-0) on Friday.  Craig Anderson is expected to start all three games.

Renegades Offseason Report

The 2009-2010 Renegades were the best team in the Howe Conference at the end of last season, but do to expiring contracts, changes still had to be made.  The Renegades believe that their changes have made their team stronger.

 Leaving the Renegades are:
G Marty Turco (Traded to TOR)
D Sami Salo (lost to UFA)
C Marty Reasoner (lost to UFA)
G Brent Johnson (lost to UFA)
D Shaone Morrison (lost to UFA)
LW Jiri Tlusty (demoted to Albany)

Incoming:
G Craig Anderson (Trade with HAR)
D Adam Foote (UFA signing)
RW Teemeu Selanne (UFA signing)
G Mike Morrison (UFA signing)
LW Brandon Yip (Trade with TOR)
RW PA Parenteau (called up from Albany)

Based on Renegade scouts, Teemeu Selanne and Adam Foote were the best players on the free agent market, despite their age, based on an accumulated score of important attributes for forwards and for defenders.  Selanne scored a 342 leading all forwards.  Second was Justin Williams who scored a 332.  The Renegades scouting department also thought they got a steal for a back up goal tender.  Using this same scoring attribute system, Mike Morrison was ranked 3rd out of the 14 available goal tenders on the FA market this year (Not including DiPietro).  Morrison was only behind Rinne and Budaj.  Brent Johnson, who was the back up goal tender last year, was tied for 6th out of all 14 goalies with Brian Finley.  Speaking of Finley, the Renegades also signed him to a minor league contract to split goal tending duty with Beauchemin in Albany.  Yan Stastny was also signed to play for Albany to help send that team back to their own playoffs.

Renegades Game Preview

The 2010-2011 NHA season is about to start!  The Renegades will start the year off on the road in Denver.
"This should be a good game to form team chemestry."  Said Renegades coach Tom Renney.  "There are no easy matchups in Hockey, all 30 clubs are great teams, but we feel that the Death will be a good way to ease into the work load of the season."
New goal tender Craig Anderson is not expected to be in net at Denver.  It is rare that the starting goal tender would not be starting the first game of the year when he's healthy.  Mike Morrison is expected to be in net in Denver.  The Reason why Anderson is not expected to start vs the Death is because the Renegades have a home game the very next day vs and arguably tougher team, the Philadelphia Phantoms.  Tom Renney doesn't want Anderson to start two games in a row right off the start of the year.

Renegades Land Andy

The 2009-2010 regular season Howe Conference Champion Renegades filled their goaltending need by acquiring Craig Anderson from the Havoc, sending Prospects John Carlson, Justin Pogge & Calvin de-Haan to the Havoc.  The Havoc also acquired the Renegades 6th round pick of the 2011 draft while the Renegades acquired the Havoc's 2nd round pick of the 2011 draft.  The past few seasons the Renegades have had Marty Turco in net, who has done an excellent job, with a .920 save percentage last season.  Though do to his contract expiring and the fact that he is getting up their in age, the Renegades wanted to find a new younger goal tender that could be between the pipes for the R-Gades for seasons to come.
Anderson also happens to be the team's general manager's favorite goal tender in the league.

The Renegades are likely not going to make any other deals, as their roster is relatively set, with just about everyone but Turco and back up goal tender Brent Johnson expected to be retained.  If they have budget room after they have negotiated contracts with their RFAs, expect the Renegades to consider going after a top LW or C free agent.

Yippy! Yip joins the Renegades!

The Renegades made their second trade of the postseason acquiring right wing Brandon Yip from the Toronto Thunder.  The Renegades, who were the regular season Howe Conference champs last year, taking the conference lead for the first time all season after the final game of the year, felt they needed more young fire power in their roster.  The Renegades GM Jordan Levine had this to say about the trade:  "Brandon Yip has shown a lot of talent and a lot of potential last year for the Thunder, if he can keep from getting injured, he could be one of the top players in on the Renegades in the future."  In order to acquire Yip, the Renegades did have to give up their first round pick of this years draft plus next years 4th round pick, along with the rights to negotiate a new contract with Marty Turco, whose contract expired after last season.  Turco became dispensable after the Renegades acquired Craig Anderson from the Havoc a few days ago.
Because the R-Gades acquired Yip, it is expected that Dustin Byfuglien will vacate his 3rd line RW position for Yip, and go back to playing defense as the Renegades are lacking in defense do to losing UFAs Shaone Morrison and Sami Solo to free agency.  The last defensive spot will either go to a free agent or Renegades promising defensive prospect Kevin Shattenkirk.

The R-Gades have announced though, that trading rights for Morrison, Solo and Brent Johnson are still available for little to nothing if any team that has yet to re-sign UFAs are interested.

Renegades Report 2009

Carolina Renegades
(AP)
Carolina Renegades
GM: Jordan Levine
Coach: Tom Renney

Record: 35-33 91pt
Playoffs: First Round Lost 4-0 vs. Laval Sentinels

2008-09 Season was an up and down year for the Renegades. The team started out the first couple of months as the worst team in the NHA. They then made a turn around, and from December to February the Renegades had the best record in the league, and climbed up to as far as second overall in the Howe conference standings.

The Renegades then finished out the season fairly poorly, just hanging on to a playoff spot, as they suffered a few injuries to their defense and lost veteran defender Mathieu Schneider in a trade for wingman Dainius Zubrus, who was having a career year with the Gargoyles this season.

Returning Forwards / Salary / years remaining on contract
C Chris Drury / 7.000.000 / 4yr
C Matthew Lombardi / 1.900.000 / 1yr
C Marty Reasoner / 2.000.000 / 1yr
LW Alexander Steen / 2.400.000 / 1yr
LW Ryan Hollweg / 775.000 / 2 yrs
RW Brian Willsie / 500.000 / 2yrs
RW Milan Hejduk / 3.750.000 / 1yr
RW Patrick Kane / 485.000 / 1yr

Free Agent Forwards
C Shawn Horcoff UFA
LF Cory Stillman UFA
LF Ray Whitney UFA
RW Dainius Zubrus UFA

The Renegades have a good amount of returning forwards, but they currently have four key forwards without contracts for next season. They will try to resign a couple of them if it fits within their budget, and then look at free agency to fill up their remaining holes.

Top Offensive Players in AHA
RW Barry Tallackson
RW Pierre Parenteau
RW Francois Bouchard

Tallackson led the Attack in points this season with 73 in 75 games. He also led the team in goals and was second on the team in assists. His contract expires this year, but he is a RFA so it is likely that the club will resign him to another minor league contract. He might see play in Carolina next season if injuries occur to the wingman.

Parenteau is in a similar position as Tallackson. They are both the same age, with retiring contracts. Parenteau was second in the AHA in points and had the highest +/- out of anyone on the team with 38.

Bouchard is just a 20 year old wingman who had a stellar season with the attack this year, leading the team in assists with 43. He’s fairly young so it is expected that he will spend more time in Albany before reaching Carolina. Bouchard is ranked the 3rd best prospect in the Renegades system.

In the Market for:
Talented lineman to replace the holes left by the leaving veterans.

Returning Defenseman:
D Colin White / 2.800.000 / 4yr
D Ruslan Salei / 2.700.000 / 2yrs
D Sami Salo / 3.400.000 / 1yr
D Shaone Morrisonn / 1.300.000 / 1yr

Free Agent Defenseman:
D Dustin Byfuglien RFA
D Ian White RFA

The Defense has always been one of the Renegades weakspot, but they do have a lot of depth heading into the 09-10 season. They just need a top defender to lead the defense, which they haven’t had since Campbell or schnider

The two defenders on the NHA team without a contract for next season are two young RFA’s, so they are expected to be signed for the 09-10 season.

Top Defenseman in the AHA
D John Scott
D Bryce Lampman

These two performed ok this season, though defense is also a weakspot on the AHA team. Luckily the Renegades top prospects are defensive men, like Shattenkirk and Carlson, who will be joining the Attack in the coming years.

In the Market For:
A solid standout defender

Returning Goalies:
G Brent Johnson / 650.000 / 1yr
G Marty Turco / 5.000.000 / 1yr

Free Agent Goalies:
None

The goaltenders have been the piece that has remained constant over the last few years. Johnson had a slightly poorer year this season compared to last season, which forced Turco to seeing even more playing time. Turco’s numbers were also a little down from last year. His save percentage went from .912 to .902 this season. The Renegades might try to move Turco because his contract will expire after next season, in hunt for a replacement goalie. The Renegades did bring back Justin Pooge who is expected to eventually at least have the backup spot in Carolina.

Top Goalie in the AHA
G Justin Pooge

Pooge was traded back to the Renegades in the Sidney Crosby trade last off season. He spent the whole season as the starting goal tender in Albany and did a stellar job. He had a .920 save percentage with a 3.16 goals per game average, getting wins in 43 of his 78 games. It would not be surprising to see him in the NHA next season as a back up goaltender.

Salary Committed: 33.975.500

Needs: Talented players to fill team holes.

Trade Block: Players with big contracts.

Renegades Eliminated

The Raleigh Chronicle
(AP)
RALEIGH - The Renegades were swept by the number one seeded team in the How conference by Laval Sentinels in a 4-0 shutout by Ryan Miller. The Renegades had an up and down season this year, comming out of the gate with a very slow start, being the worst team in the NHA, to in mid season, become the hottest team in the NHA, and for a time, the number two seed in the Howe Conference. "We are dissapointed that we were swept, we knew Laval would be a tough team to play against, but we wanted to put up a fight, and at least win one. We all tried really hard, and we'll be back next year." Stated team captain Chris Drury. The Renegades are one of the many teams that have not won the NHA cup yet, but in recent history, have been a regular visitor to the NHA playoffs. Non of the teams that made the playoffs this year, have won the NHA cup, except for the Las Vegas Knights, who won the cup in the 05-06 season when they were the Victoria Vengeance and the Tampa Bay Thunder in 03-04.
"I'm proud of what this team was able to acomplish this year. There were many new faces in the beginning of year, star players that have never worked together before, so it took them awhile to get use to playing Renegades hockey, though once they became confortible in Raleigh, we became the hottest team in the league. It really says a lot about the devotion each of these players have for the game, that they didn't give up when they were the worst in the league, and battled back for a playoff spot." Stated coach Renney.
The Renegades finished the 2008-2009 regular season 35-33 with 91 points.

Big Game Tonight!

The Raleigh Chronicle
(AP)
RALEIGH – The number two team in the Howe Conference, the Carolina Renegades, will be hosting the number one team in the Conference, the Laval Sentinels. This should be quiet an exciting game, and should be a major factor in seeing if the Renegades have enough juice to make it all the way to the top before the regular season ends. The Renegades started the first two months being the worst team in the Howe Conference, but have slowly built their way up, having one of the best records in the league since early December, they now see themselves sitting number two seed for the playoffs in the Howe Conference. This game here tonight could very well be a preview of the Howe Conference Championships later this season. Can the Sentinels, who have been the dominate team hold of the hard charging underdogs, the Renegades? We’ll find out tonight!

Renegades on FIRE!

The Raleigh Chronicle
(AP)
RALEIGH - The beginning of this season was a real shocker for Renegades fans across North Carolina. First, they learned that the Renegades had traded Sidney Crosby during the off-season, and then was the worst team in the league for the first month. It looked like their General Manager Jordan Levine had made some bad decisions and the fans looked like they were going to run Levine out of the town. Jordan stated that he thought the team was good, and he believed they just needed to build chemistry. He was hoping that the team would get it together in time for the playoffs. Well, it looked like that wasn't going to happen, when he recently announced that we was going to change his focus to next season. When Levine said this, it lit a spark under the Renegades, and they now see themselves 3rd in the conference! The Renegades started the season going 3-11-0-1. In their last 15 games, they have gone 13-2, and since early December, they have been 22-6. This team has been one of the best teams in the league since December, and it looks like they might keep rolling and could be a serious threat in the playoffs. They acquired Ray Whitney a from the Anaheim Tigers a few weeks ago. "Even though I had announced I was shifting into offseason mode, when I saw that Whitney was available, and noticed that he has scored more goals then anyone on our team and in less games, I was thinking, man we have to get this guy." says the team's GM Levine. One reason that the Renegades front line is so effective this year, is that they have a combined PIM of 18! The three of them, Whitney, Drury and Kane have only committed 18 minutes worth of penalties.

The only problem with this team, is they have a ton of veterans, and a lot of expiring contracts, so they are not sure what they are going to do during the offseason, other then they know that a lot of changes will be made. These changes will again most likely mess up the team's chemistry coming into this season, but hopefully it wont effect them too badly. The guys whose contract's are set to expire at the end of the season are: W Ray Whitney, C Shawn Horcoff, W Cory Stillman, W Dustin Byfugin, D Ian White, and D Mathieu Schnider. The one good thing, is this will free up a lot of salary space for the Renegades to go and acquire more players. Rumor has it that they might be interested in trading away some of their draft picks before the draft this offseason to improve their team. They have a number of draft picks, along with a couple more from the Crosby Trade.

Renegades Shift to Selling Mode

The Raleigh Chronicle
(AP)
This years NHA season has been quiet a wild one. No one expected the Renegades to not even be one of the top 8 teams in this years playoffs, let alone near the bottom of the standings. The Renegades officialy decided that it was time to start focusing on the future. They have dones of vets on the team that they are looking at parting with in order to get younger players, prospects and draft picks. They are currently valuing players that are ready to step up into the NHA in a year or two over draft picks and very young prospects who have a lot of years before they are ready for the big leagues.

Players who are expected to be on the block are those of Drury, Horcoff, Rolston (who will most likely get the best offer out of these players) Stillman, Laperrire, Schnider and others.

The team said they weren't interested in dealing Patrick Kane, but pretty much anyone else is a possibility.

Albany's under Attack!

ALBANY, NY - The NHA organizations of the Carolina Renegades and the Chicago Hitman did a lot of exchanging over the off season. Not just trading big names like Sidney Crosby, Brian Gionta and Patrick Kane, but also swapping their AHA locations. The Renegades were in the last year of their contract with their AHA team, the Victoria Ice Caps, and so were the Hitman with their Albany Fire Ants. So during the off-season, both of them ended up swapping locations, keeping AHA hockey in both Albany, NY and Victoria, BC. The Hitman's new AHA affiliate is the Victoria Cougars, and the Renegades' new AHA affiliate is the Albany Attack.
The movement of these two teams is much more convenient for the two organizations. Sean Paul, general manager of the Hitman, is from Canada, and was happy to move his AHA team up to British Columbia. "Canada is like the home of hockey. It's a big deal up here, and so when our affiliation in Albany expired, I wanted to bring our team up to Canada so the great fans could enjoy the team, and so could the young up and comers see what it's like to play good ol' Canadian Hockey!" Jordan Levine, the general manager of the Renegades, was really excited when he found out that the Albany location was open. "When our contract expired with Victoria, our main goal was moving the team closer to the east coast, as close to Raleigh as possible. When I saw that the Albany location was without an Affiliate, we jumped right on it! See I'm from Albany, NY, it's just a short drive away. So it will let me see the up and comers a lot easier, and make it much more easier to transport between the franchise in Carolina and our AHA affiliate. Our AHA team hasn't really been known in the previous few seasons to be a contending one, but now that our location is so much closer to Carolina, we will have more resources and a better chance to bring home the AHA cup, and even better to the great city of Albany! The Attack will be attacking the opposition all season long!"
The Victoria Cougars are currently are currently 2-0-0 in 2 games this season, and the Albany Attack are 2-1-0 in 3 games.

Renegades Shopping Crosby?

The Raleigh Chronicle
(AP)
Rumor has it that the Carolina Renegades are in discussion to move one of their star players, their Captain Sidney Crosby has been linked to these rumors. Sidney Crosby, the youngest captain in the NHA, is known throughout the league, as the best player in the league by far. But why, would a team like the Renegades, who finished 4th in the Howe Conference standings, trade away the best player in the game? Well, do to the transaction of veteran Markus Naslund last season, and the signing of Chris Drury to a long term contract, has the Renegades budget very close to the leagues salary cap, and Sidney Crosby also happens to be an RFA.
When we asked the Renegades GM Jordan Levine, he didn’t deny or confirm any trade rumors, but he did have this to say regarding Crosby: “We have talked with Crosby’s agent, and we have been informed that Crosby wants a 7M plus salary. Of course a player of Crosby’s skill deserves such a contract, but we don’t have the cap space right now. Which means something has to happen by next season, wither it’s Crosby, or someone else, a transaction will have to be made to satisfy the budget.”
There have been reports that many teams have inquired about Sidney Crosby, the front runners are rumored to be the Chicago Hitman, Tampa Bay Admirals and the Columbus Chiefs. There is also reports that what ever transaction the Renegades make, will be done by Friday July 11th, though no press conference has been announced as of this article.
Free Agency is also right around the corner, there are many good UFA’s on the market, but there have not been many rumors regarding the Renegades on who they might go after. GM Jordan Levine had some comments about the upcoming free agent bidding: “Well, right now, our number one priority is making sure our budget is in position to satisfy our current players before we sign anyone new. I will say, that based on the fact that we currently only have four defenders signed for the 2008-09 season, if we make any free agent signings, it will most likely be with Defense.
In other news, the teams head coach last season, Tom Renney, is expected to return as the head coach for the 08-09 season, despite the teams early upset in the first round of last years playoffs. “My team is filled with veterans, and Renney has worked with them for awhile, he knows how to get the most out of them, and is a valued coach throughout the league. We’ve already made some major changes to this team, and there is bound to be a few more, so keeping Renney is futile in order to insure stability in our organization.” GM Jordan Levine had to say when asked about Renney.
Whatever the Renegades do this off season, after a great ride last season, expect Renegades fans to have a lot to cheer for next season as the Renegades hunt for the Cup.

Renegades Report

Jordan Levine
(AP)
Carolina Renegades
GM: Jordan Levine
Coach: Tom Renney

Record: 40-22 108pt
Playoffs: First Round Lost 4-3 vs. Ottawa Running Yaks

2007-08 Season was a decent season for the Renegades. They were a team in contention to win it all during the whole season, but collapsed in the playoffs to a tough Running Yaks team.

The team fortunately never suffered any severe injuries, but there was a major hiccup halfway through the season. General Manager Anthony Notarianni sent in his letter of resignation to take care of some other business, leaving a vacant seat in a crucial position for the Renegades. After the General Manager switch, the Renegades made two transactions. The renegades sent veteran Cory Stillman along with a couple other skaters to the Riverman for all-star Markus Naslund and Brian Willsie, and sent the Renegades sent defender Brian Campbell to Denver for a couple prospects.

Campbell, who was clearly the teams greatest defender, was traded away to do the fact that his contract was soon to expire and the Renegades did not have the cap space to support it.

RW David Ling / 600.000 / 1yr

Free Agent Forwards
C Sidney Crosby RFA
LF Drew Miller RFA
RW Brian Willsie UFA

The Renegades have a lot of returning forwards, including the signing of Chris Drury to a gigantic 7 million dollar deal for the next five seasons.

As for the free agents, the Renegades are currently focusing on resigning Sidney Crosby. It would be extremely unlikely to see Crosby in any other Jersey but the Renegades Jersey next season. The Renegades are trying to sign him to a short-term deal though, as they do not have the cap room to sign another player to a high contract price.

Brian Willsie will most likely be let go, if Drew Miller returns, it would be with the farm team.

Top Offensive Players in AHA
C Keith Aucoin
LW Adam Berti
LW Jiri Tlusty

Berti stepped up this year by scoring more goals then any other players on the Renegades AHA team. He is still young and has a chance of being on the Renegades club in the future, but he will most likely start next season in the AHA.

Aucoin has been a good player and captain for the AHA club, but at age 29, it will be unlikely for see much playing time in Raleigh unless he serves as a replacement do to injury.

Tlusty did not play many games last season, he split time between the AHA club and the Carolina Renegades last season after being picked up from the Brian Campbell trade. In his few games, he did perform fairly well for being 19 years, old. It is unknown at this time where he will be at the start of next season between the Renegades and the AHA team.

In the Market for:
Talented youth, more players to complement Sidney Crosby.

Returning Defenseman:
D Mathieu Schneider / 3.750.000 / 1yr
D Fedor Tyutin / 1.200.000 / 1yr

Free Agent Defenseman:
D Braydon Coburn RFA
Stephane Robidas UFA
D Ossi Vaanannen UFA
D Colin White UFA
D Ian White RFA

The defensive position has been the Renegades weakness for much of their History. Their defense expecialy got weaker during the depart of Brian Campbell. Braydon Coburn & Ian White are both expected to return, and the Renegades are also currently working on a deal with Colin White.

Ossi Vaanannen will most likely not be back with the club next season, it would be very unlikely to see him back.

Stephane Robidas will also most likely be testing the free agent market. There is a chance the Renegades might offer him a contract over the summer months, but he is not expected to return.

Top Defenseman in the AHA
Matt Jones
Bryce Lampman

These two performed well with the AHA club, but will most likely need a little more seasoning before getting a shot at the NHA.

In the Market For:
Top 4 Defenseman with a low contract price.

Returning Goalies:
G Brent Johnson / 650.000 / 2yr
G Marty Turco / 5.000.000 / 2yr

Free Agent Goalies:
None

The Renegades goalies were close to unstoppable. Turco did very well this past season with a .912 save percentage, and had three consecutive shutouts during the regular season. Johnson also performed very well for a backup. There has been rumor that the Renegades are looking to move Turco to gain more salary space, and looking to acquire a new goalie, but you know what they say “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.”

Top Goalie in the AHA
Joey MacDonald

MacDonald did a great job with the Renegades AHA team last season, he had a .936 save percentage. But, do to being 26, and the fact that the Renegades have two good goalies in Raleigh, it will be unlikely that he will get much NHA time next season, though some might consider that he deserves it. MacDonald might become a trade chip this off-season for the Renegades.

Naslund Joins Renegades Hunt for the Cup

Renegades Post
(AP)
RALEIGH - The Renegades acquired forward Markus Naslund along with forward Brian Willsie from the St. Louis Riverman recently for Cory Stillman, Trevor Linden, Ethan Moreau and prospect Justin Pogge. This transaction adds another power forward to the already dangerous line of Chris Dury and Sidney Crosby. GM Jordan had this to say about this transaction "I think when most people see this transaction, they will mostly just notice that the Renegades gave a handful of players away for Markus Naslund, but actually, I feel this trade should help balance the team. Brian Willsie is an underrated forward who could possibly become a star player on any team."
When we sat down with some of the players, we were a little surprised by their reactions. Ethan Morneau shared this with us "I'm actually happy to be joining the Riverman. As much as I enjoyed playing with the Renegades, I felt a little sheltered being on a team with Brian Rollston, Ian Laperrire and Cory Stillman. I didn't feel that I could prosper at the left wing position in Carolina, who didn't have the room to move me to right wing."

In other news, the Renegades recently resigned left wingman Chris Dury to a five year 35 million dollar deal which will go into effect next season.

Turco leads Renegades to Nine in a Row

Jordan
(AP)
Marty Turco has shown lately that he is still one of the best goalies in the game. The 32-year-old Turco got off to a slow start with the Renegades, with his save percentage falling way below the .900 mark. Brent Johnson, the backup goalie, was seeing a lot of extra on ice time than expected, while Turco was figuring out what the cause of his decline was. “I was unhappy with my numbers, and I knew my team was good enough to contend, and I felt like I was letting my team down” Turco told our reporters. That all changed now. Turco added to the Renegades winning streak by getting two back to back shutouts. Getting one shutout is great for a goalie, but two back to back, that’s a rare feet for any goalie. Turco stopped a total of 58 shots during the two games vs. the Phantoms and Sentinels. He was awarded the 1st star in both as the Renegades went on to win both games at a score of 4-0. Renegades captain Sidney Crosby told our reporters: “he’s a great goalie to have, and knows how to stop the puck in big games.” These two wins were big games, as they put the Renegades in position to win ten games in a row when the Freeze comes to face the Renegades on 2/13. Turco will not be in goal going for three shutouts in a row; Brent Johnson will give Turco a rest during the game so Turco can be ready for some of the more challenging games.

Renegades Optimistic For Cup Finals

Renegades Post
(AP)
With the playoffs soon coming just around the corner, the Renegades feel that they are in a great chance to go to the NHA Cup Finals and win. They are in a tough conference which features two teams that are still in the single digits in losses. The Hartford Havoc and the Pittsburgh Mammoths currently lead the way in the Howe conference with 84 and 79 points respectively. General Manager Jordan Levine had some words to say on this topic:
"We have a lot of competition, but I feel that this teams chemistry has come together recently and I think it has the ability to go all the way to the NHA Cup Finals and win." Chemistry is correct, unknown by some fans who were recently watching the Havoc's win streak, the Renegades have been on a march themselves. They have won the last seven games, the longest current streak out of any team in the NHA right now, and they have not lost a game yet since there new General Manager has been on board. Chris Druy, Assistant Captain of the Renegades told our reporters: "I think when we got our new General Manager, it gave the team an added stability to their work ethic, and the realization that we have one of the best teams in the NHA." The Renegades has had a history of bad luck, only making the playoffs once in 1999-00 before the lockdown during the 2004-2005 season.

The Renegades are currently tied for 4th in the Howe conference with 72 points with 33 games left on the schedule.

Renegades Introduce New GM

Jordan
(AP)
CAROLINA - The Carolina Renegades announced that they are ready to try and win it all as they announced their new GM today. Anthony Notarianni, who recently resigned from his position at the Renegades, didn't do too much for the club, who is filled with talent and look like they could possibly be contenders. The Renegades looked at their applications and finaly decided that Jordan would best fit the spot as their new GM.
"Jordan seems to know what he is doing here, and he has some experience which should help bringing this team to the playoffs." Stated the management.
"I am excited to take control of thie Renegades team, they look pretty good, and I plan to build the team around Sidney Crosby and Chris Druy."

One of the reasons Carolina picked Jordan, is his past sports managerial experience. In Baseball, Jordan led the BBFTG Astros to the League Championship series in the leagues second season. In the 1st team the Astros finished the season below .500, but in 2007, they had the best record in BBFTG.

Stillman Re-Signs in Carolina

John Liu
(AP)
Today the Carolina Renegades have announced that they have come to terms with winger Cory Stillman.

It was speculated that the Renegades were trying to get Stillman signed on the dotted line for weeks now but finally got him to do so today. Stillman agreed to a 2-year, 5-million dollar contract that will pay him 2.5 million each season.

"I'm glad that we could get a deal worked out," Stillman said. "I really love it here in Carolina and I hope to finish my career here."

Last season Stillman scored 30 goals and added 35 assists in 74 games for the Renegades. It will be expected that Stillman continue this pace as he will be Sidney Crosby's linemate on the left side.

Renegades Add Scoring and Grit

Farhan Laljhi
(AP)
When asked about his two moves at the deadline, GM Noto had this to say "When a clutch guy like (Chris) Drury becomes available, you make a move... and (Ian) Laperierre, this guy is like sandpaper!"

Lapps is expected to start on the 4th line with Steen and Slater, while Drury will add much needed scoring depth to the team, and step on the 2nd line with Torres and Horcoff.

Crosby in A Slump

NHA News Post
(AP)
After a strong start to the 2006-07 season, Sid the Kid has found himself in the biggest slump of his young career. With only one point in his last six games, Crosby has now fallen out of the NHA's top 50 scorers.

The first pick in the 2005 NHA entry draft by the Carolina Renegades who won a draft lottery following the lockout season, Crosby has an impressive 133 points in his first 128 career NHA games. Still, fans are left wanting more, as the Nova Scotia native should be at the top of the scoring charts with his level of talent.

"The pucks just haven't been going in for me lately" said Crosby when asked about his 8 goals on the season. "Right now my main priority is first and foremost to get the Renegades into the playoffs."

Carolina currently sits four points out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Howe conference.
